An Optical Network Unit (ONU) and an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) are both devices used in fiber-optic networks, but they differ in their roles and locations within the network architecture.

The key differences between an ONU and an ONT are:
Location:
ONU (Optical Network Unit) is typically located at the service provider’s end or in a central office/distribution point closer to the customer premises.
ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is installed at the customer’s premises, such as a home or business.
Function:
ONU acts as an intermediate device that receives the optical signal from the service provider’s network and distributes it to multiple ONTs or end-user devices.
ONT serves as the termination point for the fiber optic cable, converting the optical signal into electrical signals that can be used by the customer’s devices (e.g., computers, phones, TVs).
Network Architecture:
ONUs are commonly used in Passive Optical Network (PON) architectures, where multiple customers share the same fiber optic cable.
