How To Test Fiber Optic Cable Without Tester?

Testing fiber optic cables without specialized equipment can be challenging, but there are some methods that can be used to assess the cable’s continuity and general condition. Here are two methods to test fiber optic cables without a tester:

1.Visible Light Source: This method involves using a bright flashlight or LED torch to check the continuity of the fiber optic cable. Cover one end of the cable with your hand and shine the light into the other end. If you can see the light at the other end, the cable is likely intact. However, this method is not as accurate as using specialized equipment and should only be used for a rough assessment of the cable’s condition

2.Using Existing Equipment: In a telecommunications closet where you have access to existing and operating equipment, you can use the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of existing equipment as a light source. Attach a fiber patch cable to both ends of the strand(s) under test and hold the patch cable up to the existing equipment’s LED indicators. Make sure you’re using a “constantly on” LED rather than one that blinks, and use exposed LEDs rather than reflected or guided ones, as they have less power. Verify the light at the other end of the cable, but do not look directly into the cable. This method can help you test multiple fibers at once, depending on the number of LED colors present in the closet.

These methods are not as accurate as using specialized equipment, but they can provide a rough assessment of the cable’s condition in certain situations. Always use proper protective eyewear when testing fiber optic cables, as they can emit harmful UV rays that can damage your eyes.
