What is Fiber to the Room (FTTR)?

FTTR, Fiber To The Room, means fiber to the room. Fiber to the Room (FTTR) is a home or office internet solution where fiber-optic cables are directly installed into individual rooms or zones, ensuring ultra-fast internet speeds and consistent performance. Unlike traditional setups, which rely on Wi-Fi routers with variable signal strength, FTTR delivers stable and high-bandwidth connections in every part of a building.

During the 10th Global Ultra-Broadband Summit (UBBF 2024), Tang Ke, deputy general manager of China Telecom, introduced that in terms of home networks, China Telecom has fully entered the era of Gigabit FTTR. In less than two years, the scale of FTTR users has rapidly grown from 230,000 to 6 million, and the delivery and operation and maintenance capabilities have been improved simultaneously. As network experience perception improves, user value is also improving.

China Telecom’s report for the first three quarters of 2024 shows that China Telecom’s smart home revenue increased by 17.0% year-on-year, and the value contribution of smart homes continued to increase. China Telecom is accelerating FTTR upgrades and gigabit application expansion, continuously upgrading whole-house smart applications and services, strengthening AI upgrades and integration and mutual promotion of platforms such as smart homes, smart communities, and digital villages, and creating a community – village life circle and service circle.
